Probably not what your bank account wants to see, but have a look at this. ^ Sorry if i'm being dumb, but what are those two tripods? I love the low angle positioning. but in the end you do end up with a neat collection of all the ones you'll never use again in your basement or closet. if you cannot control it within reasonable precision it then fails its purpose. it is a tool of composition as integrated as the lens and camera itself. If you short yourself on a tripod you will pay again and again until you learn. these tested loads always seem to be a touch optimistic for actually working with. You basically want to purchase a set of legs and a head that supports roughly 2x the total load your actually ever put on it. There are other choices as well that are relatively affordable, but not $80. I bought a Feisol 3401 CF tripod, acratech ball head and QR plate.

The head droops when you try to position a dSLR plus lens for critical composition. The QR plate with the MAXI is a joke the camera is not snug on the tripod, it can rotate on the screw. Eventually, I'm sure I'll end up selling this tripod and getting a carbon fiber Gitzo with a RRS ballhead, but until then, my setup stably supports my gear.īought the MAXI eh. I feel I'm pushing my luck with my Manfrotto 3021/488RC2 combo, and that's a $250 tripod that weighs 7lbs and is pretty darn solid.

Good luck.but I have a feeling that you'll be spending at least that $200 when you realize that your little two pounder is useless if there's a breeze at all. There are actually a lot of reviews for this little 2lb tripod and all of them have been pretty good I just bought a Velbon MAXi 343E with ballhead and case for $75. The legs do spread but that's when they really show leg flex.

All others have given their opinions on other models.ĭidn't want to be negative as I said the Slik Sprint Pro is probably one of the best in the 2 lb category but good do you really expect a 2lb tripod to be? The ball head is not very sturdy and I would definately not trust your XT with 70-200 on it. Best thing is to go to a local shop that has one and give it a try.Īnd that one person is the one who actually has the same model of tripod in question. Interesting! one person said something negative and that has swayed you. I need a tripod soon, and a light one to boot. When hiking I can always bring along a stuff sack with loop and get rocks from the ground whenever needed. should I look elsewhere? How the heck do the legs flex? I'm guessing the joints and extension areas are really bad? Thank you very much for the first hand account. It is also sturdy like a rock (also, heavy like a rock, but you cant have everything.) The head is decent too. I put a hook on the bottom center column to hang weight which makes it a little more stable. Still, it may be one of the best in the 2lb category. I have the Slik Sprint Pro and it's barely adequate. Got this and many more with a good tripod.have fun! If your a backpacker spend the money you won't regret it. Also bought the gitzo magnesium ball head for weight consideration, but returned it in favor of the more stable giottos mh 1002. I love it.especially considering the mileage and climbing we do. I saved all year to get a gitzo for my last trip, changed my mine based on weight ( saved money), and went with the slik Pro713CF. I haven't tried the ones you linked but I've used my friend's Slik 300Dx. Or maybe I could go with a Bogen Manfrotto 714B

My old tripod, while cheap, was extremely light at around 2 pounds, and this Slik is 2 pounds also.Īnd no, I don't have $200 to spend, unless someone can convince me that I will NEVER have to spend $200 again on another tripod EVER, or at least for many many years to come.Īre ballheads or 3 pivots recommended? I'm assuming ballheads don't have a quick detach feature? Will cheap ballheads eventually lose their locking power? I backpack so lightness is a huge factor. The most that I would have on this tripod is a Rebel XT and a 70-200 f/4L. My old $10 tripod has bit the dust because the legs no longer lock properly

I'm thinking about getting the Slik Sprint Pro for $80.
